Murton Wildlife Trust is named after the farm that covered what is now the nature reserve. The farm, for many years produced corn and flax for the local mills then became a mixed producer of grain, potatoes and beef cattle. In the 1960's two of the current trustees bought the farm following the passing of the resident farmer. Shortly after this the land was leased to Mr Henry Stewart who continued to farm the land until his retirement.
